MIRROR PHASE

MICHAEL WALSH PHOTOGRAPHY

Mirror Phase project by Marcin Kowalik starts in 2011, exhibition in Dublin was placed in 2013, he substituted the old paintings for a mirror as the subject of his interest. His work at the initial phase of this cycle was a meta-and-physical journey into and out of a mirror. Discovering Lacan's psychology was a milestone for the further development of the project. The period in one's life between 6 and 18 months is when our ego is being shaped – we begin to identify with our reflection in the mirror. This moment when we first recognize ourselves, “zero point”, initiated my deliberations on the moment when the painting first comes into being in our consciousness. Mirror Phase was the cycle and exhibition in Dublin in February 2013 in Sol Art Gallery Dawson Street by Anna Tchorzewska Geoghegan. "I am absolutely fascinated by Kowalik theory, the parallel reality and the world on the other side of the mirror. The psychology of the human mind percept the reality as a simple child and change the reality as an adult. It is not only about opening your mind but goes far beyond this experience. Creativity and simplicity in visual perception of Marcin’s works inspired me to organize his exhibition in Dublin, as a volunteer". Our idea was very strongly supported by Irish Minister of Art and Heritage Jimmy Deenihan and also Embassy of Poland in Dublin and Ambassador Marcin Nawrot.

MEANINGS

I know Marcin over 20 years, we were working together to present his “Mirror Phase” exhibition in Sol Art Gallery, Dublin. His works are simple and symbolic but cut deep through the layers of understanding and perception of the reality. His paintings so visually alive, like a riddle shape new ideas in viewers minds.

I met Tommy Barr in FE Fitzwilliam Gallery, Northern Ireland, fascinating personality, takes his viewers and listeners to another world, full of Celtic symbols and legends, still shaping the country of North Ireland from the head to toe, everyday life, everyday conversation. Beautiful land of storytelling, Celtic music and “Celtic children”.

“However, my challenge is always to retain both the disorder and the potency of the early icons and to speak in our native tongue. It is by setting this loyalty to tradition alongside sensitivity to the place where I find myself each day that I feel able to create original art. To make each icon a personal statement which I hope you will find interesting, curious, beautiful (and only occasionally grotesque)” by Tommy Barr.

Oliver Whelan is an lecturer at the NCAD in Dublin. I met him at the occasion of Kowalik lectures. He was very moved by Marcin works, so different than Iris contemporary scene.

Oliver as a teacher and artist, have this urgent need of challenging himself, to cross his limitations and stay open for challenges. He was exhibition in Australia, Mexico and many times Ireland and Great Britain. Idea born naturally, from the conversation, from the connection and from facing our own conservative approach. They all teachers and pioneers. Please enjoy Meanings.

“Discovery Poland” and the Polish Chaplaincy in Dublin have the great pleasure in presenting material, under the patronage of the “Museum of Warsaw Uprising” in Warsaw telling the story of the Polish strength and faith during the Second World War. It is a history event based on the young people of Warsaw, fighting their oppressors. The event is supported by the Polish Embassy in Dublin.

The opening ceremony will be held on the 1st of August (Friday) at 7 PM in St. Audoen’s Church, 14 High Street, Dublin. After a brief prayer for the fallen the Mayor of Dublin, Christy Burke, will officially open the exhibition. The inaugural lecture, titled “The Warsaw Uprising in Comparative Perspective”, will be given by Dr Gabriel Doherty from the University College Cork.

The exhibition will be opened for viewing from the 2nd of August to the 4th of August and from the 9th of August to the 10th of August between the hours of Noon and 8 PM.

During the celebrations two combined exhibitions will be presented for viewing – “The Fight for Freedom, The Warsaw Uprising” and “The Church and the Religion in the Warsaw Uprising”. Also there will be a presentation of the “City of Ruin” movie along with various scenes presented by the scouts and the Polish Artistic Associations in Ireland.

Every visitor will have an opportunity to try dishes eaten during the Uprising, view and touch the reconstructed barricade, purchase souvenirs from the Warsaw Uprising Museum and listen to live music. All these attractions are designed to enhance the atmosphere of those historic events.

The key highlights are included in the leaflet:

Sonia Falcone’s installation Campo de Color is certain to be one of the main attractions at this year’s show. The work, which comprises 300 clay plates piled high with spices and pigments, spreads out like a vast landscape of sensation. A visual feast provoking synesthetic perception, Campo de Color evokes time, place, memory, ‘the ephemeral nature of sensory pleasure and ultimately the fleeting nature of life itself.’ (The Art Newspaper)

Gavin Turk is a British born, International artist best known for ‘re-using’ iconic art historical imagery, painted bronze and rubbish within his own work to make contemporary social and environmental comment. The Biennial will feature his works Trash and Colourful Trash.
