MIRROR PHASE – DUBLIN | MARCIN KOWALIK
The opening of the exhibition of Marcin Kowalik will take place in Sol Art Gallery (Dawson Street 8, Dublin 2) on 22nd February at 6 p.m. Mirror Phase is the latest cycle by the artist, which will be open for visitors till 7th March. The exhibition will be opened by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
The cycle was inspired by the literary story of Alice in Wonderland and the theories of Jacques Lacan. The mirror is understood not so much as the reflection of the outside world but as a glass pane behind which our own inner world and our stored notions and imaginings are concealed. An encounter with a reflection gives rise to a question - to what extent is the image that we see real and to what extent is it what we want to see? The issues of the perception of a work of art, its interpretation, creation and contemplation have been the core elements of Kowalik's artistic work for the last few years. His previous cycles - Space of Travel, The Unknown Kingdom and Back to Basic were also an attempt to address the subject. We encourage you to take up this intellectual challenge.
The opening will be preceded by a short lecture entitled "Active watching", which will be held on 22nd February at 5 p.m. in European House (18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2).
Marcin Kowalik (1981) is a graduate of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, where he works as an assistant lecturer in the studio of Professor Adam Wsiołkowski. In 2009 he defended his doctorate (exhibition in the National Museum in Krakow). A winner of many art contests, holder of scholarships in Poland and abroad.
